cactus

the fingertips of god
turn liquid ornaments
into prisms sparkling
and dangling from the
obstinate hair of this
cactus i've embraced

leaving the seashore
for distant lands
the lure of adventure
beckoned to where
the desert teaches
knowledge of pain

i heard those sounds
of the scorching heat
then proved a theory of
the nature of mirage

so stumbling forth
i find a friend
arms aloft to greet
i am embrace the familiar
to be closer than ever
to the real me

a drip, a drop
one here, one there
sweating my life
from all angles

when the world falls
into quiet sleep
the needles release
what's held back inside
alive without secrets
but dying of thirst
